Book hotel Ouarzazate (Arabic, ورزازات, Warzāzāt) (called The door of the
desert), is a city in southern Morocco the amazing origin of [hotel ouarzazate]
is "without noise", It hosts one of the big movie studios in the world. Several
historical movies were shot on those studios (e.g. Asterix et Cleopatre,
Cleopatra, Kundun, Gladiator and lately Alexander and Kingdom of Heaven.
Many excursions through the valley of the Draa River into the Sahara Desert
start from the city. It is home of the famous casbah of Taourirt, (the casbah of
the former caïd and later the possession of T'hami El Glaoui).
El Haj
T'hami el Mezouari el Glaoui (1879–1956) is better known in English-speaking
countries as T'hami El Glaoui or Lord of the Atlas. Caïd (appointed head) of the
Glaoua (Arabic) or Aglawou (Chleuh) tribe of Southern Morocco, based at the
Kasbah of Telouet in the High Atlas and at Marrakech. His family name is El
Mezouari, from a title given their ancestor by Sultan Moulay Ismail in 1700,
while El Glaoui merely refers to his position as caïd. Ally of the French in
Morocco. Declared Pasha of Marrakech in 1912 after delivering European hostages
taken by a pretender to the Moroccan Sultanate.
He became head of the family at the death of his elder brother Si el Madani el
Glaoui. He ruled the south of Morocco and finally conspired with Abd el Hay
Kittani and the French Protectorate to depose Sultan Mohammed V in 1953 and
replaced him with the puppet sultan Ben Arafa. The ensuing bloodshed and unrest
led directly to the independence of Morocco from France and the restoration of
Mohammed V in 1955. The Pasha was persuaded that Mohammed V favoured
nationalists and that the latter would eventually end the monarchy and the
powers of the caïds and pashas who until then had maintained a local system of
government in Morocco. It is also likely that the Pasha, aged and ill, was
manipulated by French colonists in Morocco and their Parisian friends who
succeeded in breaking his lifelong friendship with Mohammed V. According to the
historian Victor A. Vyssotsky El Glaoui's overriding motive for his actions was
to keep the Berber tribes of Central and Southern Morocco united enough, under
his control, to prevent them from being completely subjugated by the French, the
Arabs, or anybody else. It should be noted that the Pasha's eventual declaration
at the Council of The Guardians of the Throne favouring the return of Sultan
Mohammed V ensured the return of peace.
